How to use the new Instagram 'Guides': A step-by-step tutorial, with pictures

Instagram just released a new feature called ‘Guides’ that allow users to curate helpful tips into one, easy to consume, easy to share format. Initially, guides were only available to health and wellness accounts to help spread helpful public heath information, but now, Instagram has shared it will be releasing Guides to all its users.

Guides allow you to gather old posts into a curated slideshow, or create a new guide from scratch. You can add commentary to each slide, making guides ideal for step by step tutorials, tips, and recommendations.

For example, a “skinfluencer” might round up her favorite posts about skincare items in a guide that teaches followers a step by step daily skin regimen. Or a travel influencer might put together a guide on their favorite restaurants they’ve reviewed in a particular city.

Guides are also excellent for B2B influencers are enterprises. You can use guides to highlight expert speakers at an upcoming panel, for example, or perhaps give a step by step tutorial for a service you provide.

No matter what kind of Influencer campaign you’re running, it’s important to consider putting Guides in the mix. Whenever Instagram releases a new feature, they tend to heavily weight it within the algorithm to drive user adoption, increasing your chances of getting higher-than-usual engagement.

How to Create a Guide on Instagram

Step 1: Click the "Create" button (+ icon) in the upper right corner of your screen. Choose "Guide" from the list of options. The Guide icon looks like a brochure or an unfolded map.

Next, choose what kind of guide you want to create; Places, Products (excellent for B2C influencer campaigns!), or Posts. We're going to show you how to easily create a guide using posts you've already shared, though the steps are the same no matter which of the 3 guide options you choose.

Step 2: Decide on the overall theme of your guide, then choose the posts you want to include. This is a great way to give new life to old content!

Step 3: Now it's time to write some copy and pull it all together. Name your Guide, then add titles and descriptions for each post within the guide. It's helpful to think of a Guide as a curated slideshow; you want the content to flow from one slide to the next.

Finally, choose a cover for your guide!

Step 4: After you post, head to the Guide icon on your profile to see your work! You can share your guide on your stories or send it via DM by hitting the paper airplane icon in the upper right. You can also scroll to the bottom of the guide and click "+ Add Posts" to update the content in your guide any time.
